Over my spring break I decided to check out some new exhibits at the MoMa (got in for free because I'm a SUNY student, that was pretty sweet!). I stumbled across Marina Abramovic's "performance" exhibit without even knowing it. As I passed the giant Tim Burton blue blow up ....thing.. and ventured to the second floor of the museum to find a massive taped off square on the granite floor and two people starring at each other across a table, in the center. After about 30 seconds of standing there, I said, " Okay, On to the next..."

I'm not going to say much at all about this non-profit organization, but I will say... I found myself smiling the whole length of this video. Check out ">RAW and tell me what you think, I think the smiling is contagious!

Now, this certainly does not have any direct correlation with Art Therapy..buuuuuut I found it pretty interesting and made some connections! Over the weekend I volunteered at the TEDxNYED event in the city. Not only was it eye opening to see how crazy things are behind the scenes of such a huge event but I got to sit in on some pretty interesting lectures. The whole event was about the future of education, being divided into talks about participation, openness, media, networks and action. I'd like to see some talks on just how important art and creativity is to ones education! I think art should be incorporated into every child's education for the simple purpose of expressing themselves! To learn more about the event click here! TEDxNYED

The Facts! Art DOES Help!

Although this video is from 2007, there's not doubt it is still just as powerful. This 10 minute montage introduces you to 7 different members of Mississippi State Hospital's mental ward and gives you clear examples of the patients artwork and how it has helped them cope with their problems. Even if you have no interest in art itself, I think this video really shows the undeniable power art can have on an individual. Pretty moving if you ask me!

Art Therapy for the Mentally Ill

So lately I've been doing some research on Art Therapy centers close to home (Merrick, Long Island, NY.. for anybody and everyone who didn't know) to intern at this summer and learn more about this fascinating healing process! Unfortunately, I think the most legitimate centers are located in the city and financially it may be kind of hard to commute, but who knows.. I'll dream big for now!

If I can't score an internship somewhere I'd love to start raising money to donate to an organization, or maybe both!
